Microcatheters recalled from Groote Schuur, Life and Netcare facilities
The National Consumer Commission advised South African healthcare professionals to stop using affected microcatheters and segregate them pending return to Boston Scientific.
Boston Scientific microcatheters supplied to South African healthcare facilities have been recalled over a manufacturing issue, according to Bizcommunity Healthcare’s 20 October report. Facilities named in the report include Groote Schuur, Life and Netcare.
The supplier says resistance when removing a microcatheter from its carrier hoop or moving it through a guide catheter may damage the device. The affected devices are single-lumen, multipurpose microcatheters used in peripheral vascular procedures. The reported potential harm includes embolism, with the likelihood described as remote.
The National Consumer Commission advised professionals to stop using affected products, remove them from inventory and keep them separate pending return to Boston Scientific. It also directed professionals to the supplier’s notice for affected product and lot numbers.
Commercial perspective
The recall links device safety with stock control: product and lot identifiers allow the supplier’s action to be matched to inventory at individual facilities. Clinical teams, procurement staff and the supplier all have a role in carrying out the withdrawal described by the commission.
